Rotary Reads

On very special days, Rotarians forego the confines of offices, cubicles, and lecture halls and, instead, take up residence in classrooms, book nooks, pavilions, and toddler-sized libraries.

This day, deemed Rotary Reads, is an outreach and educational effort of the Club Projects Committee.  To date, three Rotary Reads days involving 45 members have been held, as Rotarians visited early childhood learning centers throughout Hamilton County:  Signal Centers, Siskin Children’s Institute, the Chambliss Child Care Center, the Downtown YMCA, and Little Miss Mag.

For each Rotary Reads day, these facilities welcome members into classrooms or other common areas to read an array of carefully selected books, all of which were donated by READ 20.

Early childhood learning and early literacy skills during the first few years of a child’s life set the foundation for continued learning, a fact Rotarians know and take to heart.  “A love of reading is critical to a young child’s future.  Our club’s Rotary Reads initiative is our effort to build a child’s passion for books,” commented Don McDowell, Chair of the Club Projects Committee.  

  All books utilized during Rotary Reads were left with the learning center to be used in continued classroom literacy activities.
